Bethel Park Wastewater Project Gets Funding Boost, Lawmakers Say

HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) and Sen. Devlin Robinson (R-Allegheny/Washington) announced today the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has approved a $15 million low-interest loan for upgrades the Bethel Park Wastewater Treatment Facility, operated by the Bethel Park Municipal Authority.

“Maintenance of utility infrastructure systems is a major safety concern, and I am glad local officials are identifying important upgrades and working hard to make them happen,” said Mihalek. “This is precisely why Pennsylvania has the PENNVEST program, to help get these plans from development to implementation.”

The project includes the installation of devices that will accurately monitor flow from separated areas. The project also includes new raw sewage pumps, other process pumps, gravity vortex grit removal units and a new coarse screen and fine screen. A new headworks building, a sludge removal and conveyance facility, and phosphorus removal facilities are part of the project as well.

“I am very pleased that assistance from the PENNVEST program will help with these needed upgrades,” Robinson said. “Anytime you can address safety and health concerns, it is certainly is a win. This project will be a huge benefit for many and serves the intent of the program.”

PENNVEST provides grants and low-interest loans to communities across the Commonwealth for sewer, stormwater and drinking water projects. The projects contribute to improving Pennsylvania’s environment and the health of its people, while also providing opportunities for economic growth and jobs for Pennsylvania workers. PENNVEST funding comes from a combination of state and federal funds.
