House Passes Mihalek’s Resolution to Recognize Oct. 13 as U.S. Navy’s Official Birthday
October 10, 2019
HARRISBURG – Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives unanimously passed Rep. Natalie Mihalek’s (R-Allegheny/Washington) resolution to formally recognize Oct. 13, 2019, as the 244th birthday of the United States Navy.
Mihalek joined forces with her colleague and fellow Navy veteran, Sen. Pam Iovino (D-Allegheny/Washington) who introduced a similar resolution in the state Senate.
The United States Navy has a long and proud history. On Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established a naval force, hoping that a small fleet would be able to offset the uncontested exercise of British sea power. Although the Continental Navy was later dismantled, Oct. 13, 1775, remains the U.S. Navy's official birthday.
From those humble beginnings, the world's most powerful naval force was born. Over the course of its 244-year history and with thousands of ships, subs and aircraft manned by the most talented and dedicated sailors deployed worldwide, the U.S. Navy is second to none.
“One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was enlisting in the US Navy back in 1997,” Mihalek said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without my experience in the Navy. As we mark the 244th birthday of the Navy, we know it is the people who stepped up to serve who make this celebration possible and I am so proud to introduce this resolution and give the Navy the recognition it deserves.”
“Over the course of its 244-year history, the U.S. Navy has been a force for good all around the world,” said Iovino. “As a 23-year veteran, the Navy has played a key role in my life by instilling the core values of honor, courage and commitment. I am proud to work across the aisle and across the Capitol building with my fellow Navy colleague to recognize our beloved U.S. Navy.”
